Wendel was born November 23, 1928, in Howard County, Iowa. She grew up in a musical family, performing across the Midwest with her parents and siblings, including appearances at venues like the Grand Ole Opry. Eventually Wendel moved to New York City where she began building her stage career. Wendel appeared in the original 1959 off-Broadway production of Little Mary Sunshine along with Eileen Brennan and John McMartin. Wendel performed in many Broadway and off-Broadway productions showcasing her as a versatile performer.
A national touring production of Annie brought Elmarie to Los Angeles where she shifted into screen acting. She built a long resume of TV and film roles, often cast for her comedic timing and bold personality. Elmarie Louise Wendel's most famous role was Mrs. Mamie Dubcek from 3rd Rock from the Sun. She appeared in 120 episodes from 1996-2001. Her character, a flamboyant, eccentric landlady, became a fan favorite and a defining part of the show's charm. Elmarie was also the voice of Aunt Grizelda in The Lorax (2012) and have guest roles on shows such as NYPD Blue, Knight Rider, American Dad!, and George Lopez.
