The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans’ organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.
There are five American Legion Posts in Howard County. Cresco Post 135, Elma Post 597, Lime Springs Post 545, Protivin Post 605, Riceville Post 244.
- American Legion Post 135 meets every second Tuesday of the month, 7pm at American Legion in Cresco
- American Legion Post 597 meets on the first Tuesday of the month, 7pm at American Legion in Elma
- American Legion Post 545 meets when needed in Lime Springs
- American Legion Post 605 meets when needed in Protivin
- American Legion Post 244 meets every second Tuesday of the month, 7:30pm in Riceville
