National Dog Day at RHSHC

National Dog Day at RHSHC

Monday, August 26th is National Dog Day at RHSHC, 1-3pm.
Did you know that RHSHC has three four-legged team members who report to work with their human counterparts, and several more who volunteer alongside hospice volunteers?
Members of the public (and RHSHC staff) are invited to come meet Kinnick, CC, and Jovie, as well as some of our volunteer handled dogs at the new Beadle Conference Center on August 26 from 1-3. They will be showing their tricks and providing snuggles! Guests can also snag a National Dog Day themed snack and learn about the benefits of animal assisted interventions in patient care.
Kinnick and CC can be found throughout the hospital (and the community), but their primary job is to serve as Howard County Hospice Four-Legged Friends. Trained dogs used in hospice care have been shown to increase pain tolerance, reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and add fun and joy to patients’ lives. Patients can be more likely to open up about their worries and stressors when a comforting dog is present! Kinnick is handled by our social worker, Brecka, and CC is handled by our chaplain, Lisa.
Jovie is a recent addition to the RHSHC dog team and visits Senior Life Solutions group and individual sessions each week. (Senior Life Solutions helps older adults cope with many things, including loss of loved ones, stresses of age-related health concerns, or diminished self-esteem.) The regulating effects of petting her and being near her calm demeanor benefit their emotional management. She’s also a topic of conversation before and after sessions – supporting socializing and health interpersonal skills! Jovie is handled by our SLS Program Therapist, Holly.
